Ally McGarva

Education Assistant

After having my own daughter, I wanted to be involved in her schooling, so I became a parent helper in her classroom—the love of supporting children to learn and grow blossomed. I love helping children feel comfortable and safe, and building their confidence, which I believe provides them with the best learning environment.

Sometimes children can be very anxious about coming to school, and I have supported many students in different ways to work through these anxious feelings. I do this by meeting in the morning to play a few games of Connect 4 or have a chat. Having my own child with ASD and anxiety gives me a personal understanding of the importance of building a connection with children first so they feel a sense of belonging.

I am a Veterinary Nurse with a lifelong passion for animal rescue, and I worked at the RSPCA Animal Shelter in Perth for a few years. I also love to foster animals - I have had many foster fails over the years (fosters that never leave my house). I have also been a huge part of cat rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming in Albany for the past several years. I recently helped create a new rescue, the Alley Cat Rescue Team.

I love to connect with the children through their pets. The bond between a child and their pet is such a wonderful thing.
